話題の「パンチくん」に会ってきました。I went to meet the now-famous “Punch-kun.”

「パンチくん」は市川市動植物園に住んでいます。
ご存じない方のために「パンチくん」のことを少し説明します。

「パンチくん」は2025年7月26日に市川市動植物園で生まれたオスの日本猿です。
真夏の暑い時期に出産したため母ザルはぐったりしてしまい、「パンチくん」は育児放棄されてしまいました。

その後人工保育機での飼育が始まり、動物園で用意したオランウータンのぬいぐるみを「パンチくん」に母ザルの代わりに与えました。
赤ちゃんのサルは母ザルにしがみつくことで安心し、筋力をつけるそうです。

その後「パンチくん」はどこに行くにもそのぬいぐるみを持って動き、一緒に寝てじゃれ合ったり、毛繕いをしたりしているそうです。
その「パンチくん」のけなげな姿がネットで話題になり、今回会いに行った訳です。

仕事があるため、なかなか平日には行けないので、2/21（土）に混雑を覚悟で出かけました。

現地に着くと、券売機の前は50人ｘ2列くらいの行列ができていました。
その列は現金とキャッシュレスに分かれていました。
現金は自販機が2台あり、キャッシュレスは窓口が一つで、現金支払いの方が流れが速かったです。

入園料は、大人440円、子供110円 、市川市内在住の満65歳以上の方と未就学児無料はです。
開園時間は、9：30～16：30 です。

市川市動物園はあまり大きなところではありませんが、中に入るととてもたくさんの人々がいました。
特に猿山の周りは凄い人だかりでした。
またSNSの影響が大きいかは分かりませんが、半数は外国人だったかなと思います。

さて「パンチくん」がどの子最初は分からないと思うので、先ず廻りを見渡してください。

あるところだけやたらに人が多いところがあり、みんなカメラを向けています。
その先に「パンチくん」はいました。
まだ小さな可愛い子ザルでした。

「パンチくん」がオランウータンのぬいぐるみママに寄り添っているシーンは、一見可愛そうに見えますが、そこには「パンチくん」の力強く生きる姿がありました。
感動しました。SNSでの人気は本物でした。

日本猿は賢い動物です。
いつか「パンチくん」が、「オランウータンのぬいぐるみママ」は、本当のママではないと分かると思います。
どもその後も「オランウータンのぬいぐるみママ」を大事にして欲しいなと思いました。

因みに育児放棄した「パンチくん」の本当のママも同じ猿山で暮らしているそうです。
いつか親子としてお互いに認識できたら良いなとも思います。

また「オランウータンのぬいぐるみママ」は家具で有名な「IKEA（イケア）」で実際に販売（2,990円）されているものです。
なんか買ってみたい気もします。

最後に市川市動物園には、動植物園入口ゲートに隣接して、民間駐車場（収容台数240台）がありますが、平日以外は車は混雑しそうなのでお勧めしません。

最もお勧めのコースは、北総線の大町駅で下車して、大町公園を経由して歩いて市川市動物園まで行くコースです。
距離は1.7ｋｍ、公園の中を自然を満喫しながらゆっくり歩いても、30分程で着きます。
小川沿いに遊歩道が整備されており、気持ち良いコースでした。

🐒 Meeting “Punch-kun,” the Baby Monkey Winning Hearts Online
I recently visited the now-famous baby Japanese macaque known as “Punch-kun” at the Ichikawa City Zoo and Botanical Garden.
If you haven’t heard his story yet, let me introduce this remarkable little monkey who has captured the internet’s attention.

🍼 The Story of Punch-kun
Punch-kun was born on July 26, 2025, during an extremely hot summer.
His mother, exhausted from the heat, sadly abandoned him shortly after birth.
The zoo staff immediately placed him under artificial care and gave him an orangutan plush toy from IKEA to serve as a substitute mother.
Baby macaques cling to their mothers for comfort and to build muscle strength.
Since then, Punch-kun has carried the stuffed orangutan everywhere—sleeping with it, playing with it, and even grooming it.
His touching bond with the plush “mother” quickly went viral on social media, and I knew I had to see him in person.

🚶‍♂️ Visiting on a Busy Weekend
Because I work on weekdays, I visited on Saturday, February 21, expecting large crowds.
Sure enough, about 100 people were lined up at the ticket machines.
Cash payments moved faster than cashless, as there were two machines for cash and only one window for cashless payments.
Admission Fees:
• Adults: 440 yen
• Children: 110 yen
• Free for Ichikawa residents aged 65+ and preschoolers
Opening Hours: 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
he zoo isn’t very large, but it was packed with visitors—especially around the monkey mountain.
Interestingly, it seemed that nearly half the visitors were international tourists, likely due to Punch-kun’s popularity on social media.

🐵 Finding Punch-kun
If you’re unsure which monkey is Punch-kun, just look for the biggest crowd with cameras pointed in the same direction.
There he was—a tiny, adorable baby monkey snuggled up to his orangutan plush mom.
At first glance, the scene may look sad, but what I saw was a young monkey full of strength and determination.
It was genuinely moving.
His online fame is absolutely deserved.

🧠 A Smart Little Macaque
Japanese macaques are intelligent animals.
Someday, Punch-kun will realize that the orangutan plush isn’t his real mother.
Even so, I hope he continues to treasure it.
Interestingly, his biological mother still lives in the same enclosure.
I hope that one day they will recognize each other again as mother and child.
And yes—the orangutan plush toy is actually sold at IKEA for 2,990 yen.
I’m tempted to buy one myself.

🚗 How to Get There (Best Route Recommended)
There is a private parking lot (240 spaces) next to the zoo entrance, but I don’t recommend driving on weekends due to heavy congestion.
The best way to visit is:
Take the Hokuso Line to Omachi Station → Walk 1.7 km through Omachi Park to the zoo.
The walk takes about 30 minutes and offers a peaceful nature-filled path along a small stream.
It’s a beautiful route and adds to the overall experience.
