花が巻き爪になってしまいました。Hana has dIngrown Nails.

私事ですが、定年退職をまじかにして人生2回目のコロナにかかってしまい暫くブログをお休みしていました。

最近の我が家の猫は…

花の右前足の爪が巻き爪になってしまいました。

巻き爪とは、爪が伸びすぎて肉球を痛めてしまう状態です。

花の歩き方が変だったので、前足のチェックをしたら巻き爪であることが一目で分かりました。

私は猫の爪切りが苦手なので、通常の爪とぎ以外に壁に桐のベニヤ板を張って、そこで爪とぎをさせていました。

この方法で1998年に初めての猫を飼い始めてから27年間、飼い猫の爪トラブルはありませんでした。

しかしネットで調べてみると、猫の爪切りはとても重要なようです。

特に6歳以上のシニア期になると爪とぎが下手になるので、爪切りは必要だそうです。

花は今年の3/3で11歳になったことと、決して活発な猫ではないので、爪とぎが上手くできなくなったことは容易に想像できます。

今回の件を反省して、我が家の猫は高齢化しているので、花を含めて他の猫の爪も週1回はチェックしようと思いました。

Hana’s right front paw has an ingrown claw.

Ingrown nails are when the nails grow too long and cause damage to the paw pads.

Hana was walking strangely, so I checked her front legs and immediately saw that she had ingrown claws.

I am not good at cutting my cat’s claws, so in addition to the regular scratching post, I put up a piece of paulownia plywood on the wall and let him scratch there.

Using this method, I have never had any problems with my cat’s claws in the 27 years since I got my first cat in 1998.

However, after researching online, it seems that clipping cat claws is very important.

It is said that nail clipping is especially necessary when cats reach their senior years, aged 6 or older, as they become less adept at sharpening their claws.

Hana turned 11 years old as of 3/3 this year, and she is not a particularly active cat, so it’s easy to imagine that she is no longer good at sharpening her claws.

Reflecting on this incident, I have decided that since my cats are getting older, I will check the claws of my other cats, including Hana, once a week.
